5 Ways to Use Your Coach
1. Feedback
John Hattie's research tells us that feedback is one of the top influences in student achievement. The same can be true for our teachers. CPMS teachers can expect feedback from their coach in the following ways:
a. Everyone - 5-10 minute chat during prep period. During this time your coach will look for and ask about the first five elements of Dr. Marzano's 41 Elements of Classroom Strategies and Behaviors. These are best practice routine events that should occur in your classroom.
b. New Staff and By Request - For those who would like extra support, a full walk-through observation of other elements can be arranged at the teacher's convenience. This includes the coach observing your class for 10-15 minutes (occasionally 20 minutes if needed) and a 5-10 minute debrief.
c. By Request - A full observation can be arranged. This will include a pre-observation meeting, an observation for a full class period, and a post-observation meeting. The teacher will set the agenda for what the coach should look for while observing.
2. Collaborate
CPMS would like to provide opportunities for teachers to collaborate with each other and/or their coach. Your coach is available to co-teach when introducing something new to your students, during small group instruction, or during FIT.
If you are interested in collaborating with a teacher outside of your department you can inform your coach. Our Professional Library (located in the Media Center) is a common ground space to meet with others.
3. Instructional Resource Support
If you need ideas, or resources, please notify your coach. You can follow your coach on Pinterest, Twitter, or visit our Professional Library to find ideas and materials.
Your coach can be a resource to you by modeling instruction and procedures. A popular choice has been Tier I classroom BE's.
We are accepting ideas and resources for our Professional Library. Please see "Celebrate" below.
4. PLC Guidance and Support
You may choose to invite your coach to your PLC for the following needs:
5. Celebrate
Are you doing something in your classroom that we should share with staff? Could you model ways to meet one of our 41 Elements? There are a couple of ways to celebrate the great things that you do for our students.
